This pet loss grief poem offers a moving reflection on the deep sorrow that follows the loss of a beloved companion. “The Darkness Remains” speaks to those moments when love and grief feel intertwined, and light seems far away. May it bring comfort to those who need it.
The Darkness Remains
Scathing tears scorch my face,
As I confront this irreversible space
Of a choice that’s seared deep in my soul,
A life surrendered by my hands control.
In winter’s darkness, I wander alone,
Haunted by shadows, forever a stone;
The weight of what ifs – they crush me whole,
A grief that gnaws, an unhealing hole.
Frosty winds howl; I feel the winter’s chill,
The season of grief, a heart that’s still, still;
I detest these hands, this feeble heart,
Why couldn’t I find a brand-new start?
Snowflakes dance on the mountains high;
A fragile peace, amidst the pain, I cry;
A festering guilt that haunts within,
Regret’s cold weight; my heart gives in.
But perhaps in spring’s gentle, warm light,
New life will bloom, and sorrow’s night
Will fade away, and peace take hold,
And heartache will slowly grow old.
