Socks was our first fur baby. We only had her with us for two very short years, but in that time she stole our hearts, became our baby, our comfort and such a big part of our little family.
She wasn’t only affectionate, loving, loyal and sassy; she also always seemed to know exactly when we needed her.
How Socks Came Into Our Lives
I had started having seizures, and my mother-in-law had kittens of her own at the time. Even though I am allergic to cats, I found that stroking them was really calming. My fiancé suggested that we get a kitten of our own, which I was very hesitant about at first, but agreed to try. Socks was the first one we saw online, and we fell in love with her.
When we met her, she was so tiny and shy, but straight away we knew she was the one. It was both terrifying and exciting all at once. She was the first pet we had together, and from the beginning she was very special to us.

Our Little Socky
Socks was tri-coloured, black, ginger and white, with four completely white paws. That was how she got her name, although we called her Socky a lot.
She was the cuddliest and most affectionate cat. I know cats have a reputation for being aloof, but not our girl. She loved to cuddle. Everyone who met her said the same. She also had an independent streak and loved going off on her own adventures, but she always came back home. Whether she had spent the day exploring or sunbathing, we knew she would come back to us.
Ever so Nosy
Socks was so nosy!
One of her favourite spots was the sunny windowsill where she could look out onto the street and watch everyone going past. She also loved sitting on top of the wardrobe where she had an even better view out of the window.
The garden was another favourite place. She loved jumping onto the roof of the shed while my fiancé and I sat outside on the garden seating. We would all be sunbathing together, just in our own places.
Those simple moments are among the ones I remember and treasure most.
Her Sassy Side
One of the things that still makes me smile is the way Socks announced she was back home.
She wouldn’t sneak in through the back door; she actually refused to come in through the back door, even when it was open.
No, instead she would run to the front and meow at the door or the front window until we let her in, almost as though she were knocking. Her cat version of knocking.
That was just Socks. She was so sassy, and she knew exactly how she wanted things done.
She Knew When We Needed Her
What made Socky truly special was her loyalty and the uncanny way she always seemed to know when my partner or I needed her support and cuddles. Even if she was outside in the garden, if she heard us getting stressed, she would come inside and cuddle us. There was something about having her nearby that brought us comfort.
The bond we had with her was special and unmatched. It felt magical.
She wasn’t just a cat. She was our baby.
Saying Goodbye
We never imagined we would have only two years with Socks. The day Socks was hit by a car, our world as we knew it changed forever.
Losing her so suddenly has left us missing the life we thought we would still have together. She still had so much love to give.
If there is one thing I want people to know about Socks, it is how loyal and loving she was.
She was beautiful, cuddly and affectionate, but she also had that independent, sassy side that made her completely herself.
I will remember her watching the street from the windowsill, sitting proudly on top of the wardrobe, sunbathing on the shed roof, sleeping beside Sadie (her canine sister) at the bottom of the bed and refusing to use the perfectly good back door because she preferred to come round the front and “knock”.
Most of all, I will remember that she knew when we needed her.
We love her so much, and we will never, ever forget her.
💛 “Socks, our Socky, you will always be our first fur baby, and you will always be our baby. I just wish we had been given more than two years with you.”
