Impressionist painting of a person walking beside an elderly golden retriever along a sunlit autumn path, symbolizing love, memory, and farewell.

Death Of A Dear Old Friend

Death of a Dear Old Friend

Today, our dog took his last walk
A slow one, just along the street
But even that was much too far
For his old joints and achy feet

The vet was lovely, she agreed
The time had come for him to go
He looked at me with bleary eyes
I think somehow, they always know..

And it was painless, very fast
He fell asleep there on my lap
We sat there till my knees went numb
(He was a portly little chap)

I sat out in my car and cried
Wept buckets for my faithful friend
For fifteen years, he’d grown with us
But all things must come to an end

The house seems empty, quiet, still
The cats look for him everywhere
No barking when the postman comes
No snoring from his favourite chair

I’ve bagged up all his toys and balls
And put away his dinner bowl
He’ll never leave this place he loved
I feel him everywhere I go.
